San Antonio's Most Dangerous Intersections Are Well Documented. The Crashes Keep Happening Anyway.

A grey sedan with a crumpled front end crashes directly into the passenger side door of a blue SUV at a busy city intersection, creating a T-bone car accident.

New Data Identifies the 10 Intersections Where San Antonio Drivers Are Most Likely to Be Hurt in Motor Vehicle Collisions

Nearly one in five car crashes in San Antonio happened at an intersection in 2025, according to a new analysis of Texas Department of Transportation data published by the San Antonio Express-News. That's more than 8,400 intersection crashes in a single year, and the ten most dangerous locations in the city accounted for 132 crashes and 129 injuries on their own, including six serious injuries that changed lives significantly.

The data makes clear that these aren't random locations where bad luck occasionally strikes. They're specific intersections with documented failure patterns, and most crashes at them are caused by the same behaviors over and over. When another driver's inattention, disregard for a traffic signal, or failure to yield causes a crash that seriously hurts someone, that injured person and their family have legal options, and the San Antonio car accident lawyers at the Herrera Law Firm have spent more than 35 years fighting to make sure they get the compensation they deserve.

Attorney Frank Herrera Jr. built this firm on a simple principle: winning isn't luck, it's knowing how to fight, and that philosophy drives every case we handle.

San Antonio's Ten Most Dangerous Intersections in 2025

The Express-News analysis identified the following intersections as the most dangerous in San Antonio based on TxDOT crash data, excluding freeways, expressways, and ramps:

  • E. Bitters Road at Heimer Road: 9 crashes, 16 injuries, 1 serious injury. The primary cause was drivers failing to yield the right of way when turning left, with driver inattention and disregard for signals also documented as factors.
  • W. Poplar St. at N. Colorado St.: 22 crashes, 15 injuries.
  • E. Euclid Ave. at Brooklyn Ave.: 28 crashes, 14 injuries, 3 serious injuries.
  • Somerset Road at Fischer Road: 17 crashes, 14 injuries, 2 serious injuries.
  • Hunt Lane at Military Drive West: 9 crashes, 13 injuries.
  • Crosswinds Way at Tech Com Drive: 8 crashes, 13 injuries.
  • Hunt Lane at Potranco Road: 10 crashes, 11 injuries.
  • S. Zarzamora St. at Gillette Blvd.: 9 crashes, 11 injuries.
  • W. Commerce St. at N. Colorado St.: 13 crashes, 11 injuries.
  • Classen Road at Knollcreek Drive: 7 crashes, 11 injuries.

None of these intersections has been rebuilt or redesigned to incorporate the alternative safety measures TxDOT's own five-year safety plan identifies as effective in reducing crash risks, including roundabouts and reduced-conflict turn designs.

The Behaviors Behind the Crashes

The Express-News analysis didn't just identify where crashes are happening. It identified why, and the pattern is consistent across locations. Driver inattention was the single most cited factor in crashes at these intersections, documented in 45 of the incidents reviewed. Disregarding stop signs or traffic signals accounted for 26 crashes. Failing to yield when turning left was cited in 20 cases, and failing to yield at stop signs in another 16.

Together, those four categories account for the overwhelming majority of crashes at San Antonio's most dangerous intersections, and each one describes a choice a driver made, not a mechanical failure or an unavoidable road condition. A driver who ran a red light made a choice. A driver who turned left without yielding made a choice. A driver who looked at their phone instead of the road made a choice. When that choice seriously injures someone, the injured person has a right to hold the driver accountable.

The causes of car accidents that show up in San Antonio's intersection data mirror what we see in the cases we handle: distracted driving, signal violations, and failure to yield are among the most common negligent behaviors that send people to the hospital with injuries they didn't deserve.

The Types of Crashes These Intersections Produce

The specific driver failures documented at San Antonio's most dangerous intersections produce specific, recognizable crash types, each with its own injury profile and legal dynamics.

Left-Turn Failures and T-Bone Accidents

Failing to yield when turning left is the most-cited factor at East Bitters Road and Heimer Road, the city's most dangerous intersection. When a driver turns left across oncoming traffic without yielding, the result is frequently a broadside collision that strikes the passenger compartment directly, with forces concentrated on the side of the vehicle where occupants have the least protection. These crashes produce some of the most severe injuries of any crash type, including traumatic head injuries, whiplash, and serious orthopedic trauma.

Signal Violations and Rear-End Collisions

Drivers who disregard traffic signals create two distinct dangers: high-speed broadside impacts when they run red lights, and rear-end crashes when they stop suddenly or unexpectedly to avoid crossing traffic. Both scenarios pose a significant risk of injury, and the driver who violated the signal is legally responsible for the consequences.

Driver Inattention and Head-On Collisions

Inattentive drivers at intersections frequently drift out of their lane or fail to respond to a changing signal in time, creating head-on collisions that are among the most dangerous in urban driving environments. A driver who was looking at a phone, adjusting a navigation system, or simply not paying attention to the road has no defense when their inattention causes a crash.

Pedestrian and Bicycle Crashes

Intersections are the most dangerous locations for pedestrians and cyclists in any city, and San Antonio's data reflects that. Drivers who fail to yield or disregard signals at intersections don't just hit other cars. They hit people crossing in crosswalks and cyclists navigating through intersections with the right of way.

What to Do If You Were Hurt at a San Antonio Intersection

The steps taken in the hours and days after an intersection crash can significantly affect what a legal claim ultimately recovers. Knowing what to do after a Texas car accident matters, and a few actions are especially important when the crash happened at a documented high-risk intersection:

  • Get the police report: Texas law requires a crash report when injuries are involved, and knowing how to read your Texas car accident report helps you understand what the officer documented about the crash factors and who was cited. The factors cited in the report directly correspond to the patterns of negligence the Express-News identified at San Antonio's most dangerous intersections.
  • Preserve video footage: Intersections in San Antonio, particularly those on major commercial corridors, are frequently covered by traffic cameras, business surveillance systems, and dashcams. Our article on how video footage can strengthen a San Antonio car accident case explains how this evidence is obtained and used.
  • Document your injuries thoroughly: Intersection crashes frequently cause injuries with delayed-onset symptoms. Pain after a car accident that develops in the hours or days following the crash is still compensable, but documenting when symptoms began and how they progressed is essential to building a complete claim.
  • Be careful with insurance communications: Before giving any recorded statement to an insurance adjuster, understand what you're agreeing to. How insurance companies approach car accident claims in Texas is something every injured person should understand before accepting any offer or making any statement.
  • Contact an attorney before accepting a settlement: When to accept a settlement after a Texas car accident is one of the most consequential decisions an injured person makes, and the right answer almost never involves accepting the first offer before the full extent of injuries is known.
