What is valsartan?
Also sometimes known by its trade name Diovan, valsartan is a medication used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including:
- Diabetic kidney disease
- Heart failure
- High blood pressure
Valsartan was patented in 1990 and has been on the market since 1996. The drug is now available in a generic version and is one of the top 100 prescription drugs in the United States.
What health problems are associated with valsartan?
Health risks and dangerous side effects associated with valsartan have been reported in many cases in the past two decades. Some of the most common side effects associated with valsartan include:
- Low blood pressure
- Joint pain
In more serious cases, valsartan (particularly the generic version of the drug manufactured overseas) has been linked to several very serious health problems, including:
- Colorectal cancer
- Gastric cancer
- Kidney cancer
- Kidney damage
- Liver cancer
- Liver damage
These health problems were linked to carcinogenic impurities found in certain brands of valsartan manufactured in India and China. As a result of these health problems, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration suspended sales in 2018 of valsartan manufactured in China and India and suspended the company’s certificates of suitability, which resulted in these products not being sold in the United States and European Union countries.
How can a product liability attorney help me with my valsartan injury case?
Legal cases involving injuries linked to valsartan can be extremely complicated. Because the hazards associated with these prescription drugs can involve multiple companies (the company manufacturing the drug, the one marketing or distributing the drug), dealing with all of them can be a challenge. This is especially true if the company making the drugs is located in another country. In each case, each company often has several lawyers representing them and defending their actions. The reason? Because there could be thousands, millions or even billions of dollars at stake.
We know how to tackle tough cases at the Herrera Law Firm. Our experienced product liability attorneys know what evidence to look for and what questions to ask. We frequently consult with experts. We know how to negotiate with insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies and their attorneys. If they refuse to cooperate, we will not hesitate to take them to court.
