What is Zantac?

Zantac, which contains the active ingredient ranitidine, is a medication that was created to treat a variety of stomach ailments. These include stomach ulcers, heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other medical conditions which cause excess acid in the stomach.

First sold in 1981, Zantac became the world’s most popular prescription drug by 1987. Zantac was then later sold over the counter by Sanofi, the French pharmaceutical company that now produces Zantac.

Why is Zantac being recalled and removed from store shelves?

On April 1, 2020, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to Sanofi and many other companies that produce ranitidine-based medications (which includes Zantac) to stop selling those medications due to scientific studies which revealed a link between ranitidine use and cancer.

The FDA’s warning followed months of warnings about possible dangers associated with Zantac and other drugs that contain ranitidine. In September 2019, the FDA issued an advisory about increased levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in certain Zantac users. N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a carcinogenic chemical known to cause cancer.

In response, CVS, Walgreens and Walmart announced in September 2019 they would no longer sell medications containing ranitidine, which includes Zantac. One month later, Sanofi voluntarily recalled Zantac from all stores in the United States and Canada in October 2019.
